After getting a late start on the day, wasting time on a street corner outside of a 7/11, the Street Index arrived at Grant Park around 3:00 and obtained our bracelet, caught our bearings and prepared our bodies and minds for the rain. First caught some of Dark Wave Disco outside of Perry's to get the weekend kicked off on the right foot. The music began to fade and we began to wander towards south lolla and made our way to the front of the vitaminwater stage for some Crystal Castles. To our surprise, from our location, we were able to jam out to the end of STS9, but as the time drew near for Alice to rock, the aura of the crowd turned a hostile shade of grey. I'm sure it was just the weather acting in coordination with the prospects of Ethan's sick beats but it's presence was building. Chants of "Alice Alice Alice" were started by avid readers and contributes to the Index Ben and Caroline. then they came out starting with "Atlantis to Interzone" (Remix of Klaxxons) and the place went nuts. The crowd was whipped into a convulsion and the ground underneath was turned into a pulp from the moshing and jumping of ravers. When they played "Baptism", the crowd lost all sense of time and direction after that.
After that rager, the crew got about halfway to the Chicago 2016 stage for Thievery Corporation before we were sucked into a spontaneous dance party where we jammed to a tight fusion of sensual and passionate melodies. The sitar was sick and an created a very chill and very interesting change of pace from CC.
From there we got our dance on at Of Montreal where supposedly there were naked dancers (we were so far back we missed that!) They were a solid act but I wasn't feeling their set list of tracks off their earlier albums. Skeletal Lamping is top notch!
After a few more beers we made our way to Perry's for the rest of the night to catch Simian Mobile Disco, Crookers, and Kid Cudi. SMD was kinda disappointing simply because of the fact that they were working within a limited set stage. Crookers offered straight moshfest pumping out sick remixes of thunderstruck among others. One thing that struck me is that Crookers could have easily lead into Cudi with their "Day 'n Nite" (remix), unfortunately that was not the case (it came later on in Cudi's set, with some disappointing technical difficulties). However, Dat Moon Man killed with some mixtape hits and some album tracks. Shit was chill and serious at times but mostly it popped off especially when he hit the crowd with "I Poker Face".
It was a great first day... Stay tuned for more pictures and some more recap of days 2 & 3.
