Gritty realism brought to the Streets of NYC

If you asked the NYC based artist Dan Witz to describe himself he will provide a quick and consise answer. "I am a painter, and live and work in NYC. In the 80s I was also a musician and involved in the downtown art-punk scene. I live in Brooklyn now and split my time between making gallery paintings and street art". Born and Raised in the sububs of Chicago and moved to NYC in 78 to pursue studies at Cooper Union art school. In 83, motivated by the surging graffiti scene, Witz painted 40 discreet hummingbirds in lower Manhattan.

"Birds of Manhattan"- West Side Highway near Chambers St. 1979

The Hoodys came from a dark period in the early nineties. Drugs, HIV, poverty/despair/danger were like a pall of doom over the lower east side. The grim reaper hoody posters were inspired by plague attitudes from the middle ages and deer x-ing signs--the way the hi way department puts up those yellow diamond with black deer silhouettes as warning signs.
"Hoody"- Clinton st. btw. Broome and Delancey. N.Y.C. 1994.
Here is an exerpt from an recent interview where Witz talks about the popularity of street art:
"most art's been locked down. Museums and galleries are gated communities. There's cool stuff going on there but, in the age of the easy-access internet, it's just too ghetto-ized, too difficult and intimidating for the larger public to find. I think another reason why street art is so popular these days, besides the obvious easy attention and alt.fame thing, is that since it's not for sale, it can't be owned, it's not tainted, it's an alternative to Art and Culture that's become just another commodity. That gives it authenticity, credibility to anyone who's had to grow up soul-starved in the consumer wasteland. So goodbye monolithic record companies and pretentious art magazines; put your band on Myspace and stick your art up on a lamp post."

Below is an exerpt from a documentary "In Plain View"

Go to his site and check out his most recent painting series, in which Witz's portrait figures are transfixed by the beams of their cellphones and suggestive of what possible intimacies are radiated at moment in the night.
Enjoy.

Set your clocks for 8:30 PM on March 28th and turn out for Earth Hour. Remind friends, colleagues and family members to sign up on the Earth Hour website so we can count their Vote for our Earth! Details for taking part in this historic call for global action on climate change can be found here!!

More than 300 cities and towns in the U.S. representing 43 states and the District of Columbia are going dark as part of the largest global climate event in history. By breakfast time on the U.S. East Coast, the cities of Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Singapore and Manila will be celebrating the arrival of the largest global climate event in history.

Just before lunchtime in America, the lights will be dimming in Mumbai, Amman and Dubai. And by early afternoon in New York, it will be lights out in Paris, Istanbul, London and Copenhagen. From parties by candlelight to flashlight tag to simply going outside and enjoying the stars, there's no end to the ways people are planning to "turn out" for Earth Hour this weekend.

The other day, the New England based artist Maki105 placed "Peek-A-Boo Jesus" on the side of a video store in New Bedford, MA...

This is crazy... once again, amazed at the powerful effect well placed street art can be...

--Passion Pit--

When you listen to Passion Pit a truly wonderful array of colorful images appear in your frontal cerebral lobe. A combination of their upbeat vocals, unique samples, glitchy yet rhythmically sturdy beats and euphoric synth effects lead to an explosion in the blogosphere with the release of "Sleepyhead" which turned out to be to be a great beacon of musical goodness and a hopeful telescope to see what is to come from this group lads. de-classified

1)Read a variety of personal advertisements
2)Locate and photograph posters in their homes
3)Become 'de-classified'

Through the anonymity of personal advertisements, an amazing array and spectrum of human emotions, needs and experiences shows up- love, lust, anger, fantasy, and pain are just the first few to come to mind.

de-classified feels that by combining the images with the ads, hopefully the viewer will get a very intriguing view of each subject. in addition, the viewer and community at large is able to anonymously view and comment on each of the pieces hopefully will ad another interesting layer, re-classifying the de-classified process. What do you think about that?

Sam Songailo

Sam Songailo’s paintings are an intricate layering of visual systems, that initially draw you in with a particular intensity of color. His use of bright colors and geometric shapes reminded me instantly of Peter Halley. Both artists share an obsession with surface, texture and color.

Unlike Halley, Songailo's paintings seek to meditate on human experience instead of acting as a critique to it. However, like Halley, the forms and colors used by Songailo impart a specific message of empathy and enthusiasm for the world around him. For the viewer it is possible to experience the enjoyment of process to be pulled into the artist’s world.

This is a bogus... Kid Cudi has been reppin' only the tightest beats, and freshest lyrics brought to the rap game in a long time... Its only a matter of time before he realizes that its worth it to put up with the bullshit and bogus actions that manifest in and around the game that obsesses over talent and genius.

Fresh Stuff From Ludo In Paris: "The Boombapaver"

-Winter Gloves-

Winter Gloves began in Montreal as a regular one man band. Since then the band has grown to include Charles F (lead singer/songwriter/wurlitzer), Pat Sayers (drums), Vincent Chalifour (synths) and Jean-Michel Pigeon (guitar/glockenspiel). After the Canadian release of the band’s full length in the Fall of 2008, the band performed alongside Tokyo Police Club. Reactions to the album and these shows immediately secured showcase opportunities internationally. Their most recent LP titled "About a Girl" is ten songs driven by the sounds of keyboards and drums, all wrapped up in a constant buzz of bass and gritty synths. The LP is slated to hit America March 24th. Below check out a music vid to their new single "Let me Drive", followed by some more fierce tunage. Zut alors.

Goldsmith's college art student Sam Spenser created the work. Titled "Bloom" can be seen in an oak tree outside the Wapping Project. The instillation looks like these umbrellas were blown out of their owners' hands and into a tree. Positioned wide open, they are attached to the ends of the branches, and look sorta like freshly bloomed flowers. Read more here...

Lol-la-peek leak at the 2009 headliners

A few days ago the Tribune put some gelatin in the soupy mix of rumors giving it some news trustworthiness. Depeche Mode, the Beastie Boys and recently reunited Jane’s Addiction are expected to headline the 2009 Lollapalooza music festival. These positions are supported by the un-sung rule that bands are not allowed to come anywhere close to the Chicago land area 3 months before the August 7-9 set date... sweet.

Jay-E x The New Royales

The New Royales, which consists of DJ Khalil, Chin Injeti, Liz Rodrigues and Erik Alcock, are currently working with Jay Electronica on a new EP and the project promises to bring a refreshing outlook on the hip-hop game for sure. Check it.

Pictchfork Music Fest 2k9

Last week, pitchfork announced that the fourth annual Pitchfork Music Festival would jump off at Union Park July 17-19. Save the date and book any necessary flights, this should be good gauging from the bands already released. The bands already released are found below...

Tortoise

Saturday
The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

If you noticed, Friday night bands will be participating in a new series called "Write the Night: Set Lists by Request." You, the audience, vote on which songs all four bands-- Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise-- will play. It'll work like this: When you buy your ticket, you'll get a confirmation email. That confirmation email will include a link to a page where you can vote on which songs from each band you want to hear. Super sick brah...

Keep in mind that this is just the first announcement, and more bands will be added. Sunday is shaping up to be amazing.

In the Studio with Dan Deacon

Pitckfork's- IN THE STUDIO: Dan Deacon at Snow Ghost, details the production and mixing of Deacons upcoming album Bromst which is slated to be released March 24, 2009 by Carpark Records on CD and Vinyl. there are 4 parts below is part 1... and it should just re-load and auto play the next part...

-Daedelus-

So i'm sitting on the bus just minding my own bidness and Daedelus comes on the pod. Now my entire being is bombarded by melodramatic, psychedelic, experimental pop and i'm digging every second of it. Born Alfred Weisberg-Roberts in Santa Monica, CA, this producer/instrumentalist has become a force in the exerimental music realm cutting, welding, slashing, remixing, splicing, joining, and reworking any and every sound. Sometimes its almost sounds like electronic jazz, even more so when he incorporates live horns or strings. The end result is musique concrète, and something that is, at times, chaotic but entirely exciting. So now I get home and I go to the u2b to try and find some video of him mixing, turns out he uses this machine that is so... square, but it is pretty in the dark. Check it out below performing "Fair Weather Friends" followed by some other tunes...

His latest endeavor is the Love To Make Music To a digital LP released in 2008, featuring songs of "dance and romance", is available for download from iTunes. Keep on exploring. Enjoy.

Greg Williams- Photographer

Greg Williams photographic style merges reportage together with cinematic lighting and composition utilizing film industry lighting as opposed to a strobe. He does everything. news, film stills, fashion, magazine spreads, advertising campaigns. Williams has pioneered a technique he calls "Motos" or moving photos, with the use of the Red digital cinema camera. The still frames from this 4K super hi-definition movie camera are good enough quality to run double page spread in a magazine. Needless to say what he captures is fantastic to look at. Go forth and enjoy.
