Empire of the Sun @ Terminal 5

Whoa. What an excellent show! Its obvious that EOTS would have put everything out there for their second show State side EVER, but this was just way, way, way past what I expected from a performance especially in a venue as small as T5.
The Australian trio rocked the house with its catchy 80's transplanted electro driven songs which, I think, were defiantly trumped by the eye-popping visual show with elaborate choreography and bizarrely clad backup dancers. The show was something akin to a wet dream lady gaga may have if she was on an existential trip with her own id in some futuristic interpretation of Japanese vernacular culture.

They played some of the hits and some of the b-sides all with intense interludes of highly vivid visions of the inter-workings of the universe from the earth to the cosmos as seen in the beginning of their latest rendering for the song "Standing on the Shore". I recommend checking them out (at any sized venue) as they will surely bring the mess with your mind visuals and the dance-able tunes. Enjoy live footage of "Walking on a Dream" from the show below!

Teeth; they're in your skull...

Teeth are in my head! They are like a warhead candy, though sour and bitter, you always come back for more. Unfortunately i'm aware of only two songs of theirs so I return time and time again to their myspace, longing for just one new tune. There is this weird lo-fi video of them on a webisode of the british troupe The Knocking Shop...

I may not be the first one to say this but it seems as though their music is somewhere between Crystal Castles and Heartsrevolution (maybe Teeth are a bit too punk to be compared to HR). So before I say for sure, the world needs more! On August 16th Teeth release their debut 7″ See Spaces through Moshi Moshi records, but alas, it seems that it will be available only in the UK. But for now enjoy their single "See Spaces" below...

Alright Nullsleep! Tour time folks... get your tickets here for Nullsleep's Collapsed Desires Tour. Nullsleep is an electronic musician whose style is best described as post-cyberpunk: a combination of distorted synthpop, electro, and industrial produced with repurposed low-bit electronics. Something to listen to while experiencing the rapture/apocalypse/end of dayz. His mastery of sound and technology produces a sound that is simply a wall of digital noise, but driven by a deeper pulsing beat, that is inevitably torn apart in a cascade of complex glitches and drones emanating from cheap plastic devices.

'Crystal Castles': An Album Review

Alright, digital release out today! Lucky for us fans there was a leak of the album, which surely caused a panic at the distributer, bumping up the original date of June 8th, to today (a physical release of the album will be May 18th). Given that, it's time to get down to brass tacks. Did this album live up to its hype? Did their sound change? Enjoy!

"Fainting Spells"
The album starts up with some super heavy vocal distortion and, in classic CC fashion, thumps you with some 8-bit beat. This song has its moments but the relief doesn’t come till the last 30 seconds when the listener has some time to recoup and collect their ear drums from the ground.
"Celestica"
Celestica is the first single off this album and is comprised of a droning baseline and soft vocals, which makes for a very sublime song. CC does a good job building up the climax of this one for you dancing fools.
"Doe Deer"
This song leaked a few weeks ago and has been the black sheep of this new release. The song is harsh and violent, but it’s a very short song, so I guess its tolerable. Im surprised they are trying to push this one as an E.P. because it doesn’t have that catchy flare.
"Baptism"
Duh… amazing. We all knew that this one was gonna rock the house. The album version kick ass and definitely lived up to the hype.
"Years of Silence"
This song has a nice crashing noise that occupies my brain and smashes my woofer, not sure but I think someone other than Alice is on vocals for this one.
"Empathy"
Turn this sound up at a party that has been going on and people are dancing and things will get nasty! haha It’s very smooth, cool beat fusing hip hop, electronic and classic CC (Crystal Castles) vocals sound. One of my favorite song on the Album and just like most songs on this album wait till the end where the best part is.
"Suffocation"
Driving down the highway, stereo up and windows down, play this song. Sounds like it could be off the 1st EP, airy synths and a driving beat, however it has a lot more mature sound. Love how the music builds up till it is literally “suffocating” you and then an extremely relieving drop.
"Violent Dreams"
Dreamy lyrics with annoying off beat synths, frustrating and forgettable sound and song.
"Vietnam"
This is a pump up song, fist bumpin beat, pushing the song forward. The addition of the bells and twinkles sends your mind on a journey through the longest song on the CD.
"Birds"
Fusion fusion fusion! Here it is heavy metal added to the mix, giving a very raw badass feel to the song. Feel like walking through a city and causing max destruction.
“Pap smear”
The essence of this song is in its lyrics. “Tell me she's alright, tell me she's OK”. Melodically it is a slow moving song except for the bridge, it’s a very ethereal song with celestial effects added to alices’ vocals. Ethan does a well to match the overtone by including drawn out synth created chords and a jumpy back beat.
“Not in Love”
I found this song to induce, in some places, a sort of breakfast club essence mixed with Nightmare on Elm Street/Anstey synth line. These tones just made me want to sway back and forth apathetically hoping for love in all the wrong places. ~Sigh~. The wall of sound at the end brings the song to an excellent end.
“Intimate”
Ah, here we go! Classic Crystal Castles. This sound is what made them so appealing from the start. Although Alice isn’t in it, I can feel that she was in the studio turning knobs and pressing buttons right alongside Ethan. It is not pretentious or overwhelming (except for the barrage of audio about 2/3’s of the way through. Live, this song is tour de force!
“I am Made of Chalk”
This is the last song for a reason. Looking at the cover in coordination with this song, strikes a powerful chord. Distortions of words sounding like some alien being yelling “mom!”/ “mommy!” fucking rock you to the core and really complete the haunting synths and immature melodic tones.

Ultimately this CD is amazing. We here at the Street Index loved every song from the first time we sampled on Crystal Castles (II), sophomore follow up. Although they kept us waiting, Crystal Castles has matured from the last CD enormously. We are hooked, more please. Cop the digital album here.

---- Museum of Bellas Artes ----

Presenting the latest wave of Swedish pop! Oh, how a a simple cover will catapult you state side! Covering the 1964 Sapphires hit, "Who Do You Love". Forty-five years later, Stockholm trio Museum of Bellas Artes remake this soulful oldie as light, carefree, dance-pop on a digital-only single released over the summer by Force Majeure. Bouncy synths and a crunchy down beat, run counter to the angst and truly inquisitive lyrics. Ok, the best part about this rendition is the where, alone, the single bass line and the synths carry us across the bridge and off a cliff! DROP... and then back up harder and more forceful at the chorus. There is no denying the Swedish pop that has graced this site. But, it is a fact that we need to hear more from this group. Hopefully they will not disappoint, should I suggest by releasing an original single? Only time will tell. Also anyone who likes jj's n° 2 will surely lose the better portion of a day addicted to this song! Check it out below...........

Proud to be an American, where at least I know i'm free...

Concrete meets Evol

Video documentation of an installation done in dresden, germany, 2009. Painted in a 10x8m hole in the ground on the abandoned slaughterhouse area in dresden, probably the former foundation of a huge boiler plant to derive soap from rendered beef fat or other utilization of carcass. However, even 15 years after closing down, it still smells nauseating. The main slaughterhouse complex was built 1906 by Hans Erlwein, Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse Five" also takes place there and Caspar David Friedrich painted that area in 1832.

Crystal Castles- “Doe Deer” [preview!]

Last nights concert was NUTZ, also a snip of "Doe Deer" was leaked on BBC Radio. Check it out below...

Alright... seriously, Thoughts? Like? Dis-like? Last night they played a BUNCH of their new songs (setlist here!) and I have to say, I was a lil turned off by them, except for "Baptism", which is the single most bombastically amazing song! At one point Ethan was sampling some... guitar sound?? IDK about that. listen to song above and stay tuned to The Street Index for more as they come out!

Recycled Art

The Artist Derick Melander creates large geometric configurations from carefully folded and stacked second-hand clothing. These structures take the form of wedges, columns, walls and enclosures, typically weighing between five hundred pounds and two tons. Smaller pieces directly interact with the surrounding architecture where as his larger works create discrete environments. His rational is that, like architecture, clothing wears, and fades, and decays, representing an intimate record of the human presence. Also like buildings clothing defines the boundary between the individual and the outside world. Check out more at his website!

On September 24th, 2009, Mr. Melander created a monumental sculpture from 3,615lbs of second hand clothing. The resulting piece was a 5 x 7 foot cube made in 4 sections and sat outside the Borough Hall for the 5th Annual Green Brooklyn Green City Fair and Symposium.

Why 3,615 pounds? That's the amount of textile waste created by New Yorkers every 5 minutes. Clothing for the event was loaned by the textile recycling company, Wearable Collections.

HEALTH- "We are Water" ---> (dir. Eric Wareheim)!

I mean wow... this is the single most intense music video I have ever seen this year. I'm really digging the thrilling and grotesque imagery thats captured from Mr. Wareheims' vision for this song (and some of his comedy of late on Adultswim). But seriously, be careful watching this while eating....
