Michael Wolf: "A Series of Unfortunate Events"

Photographer Michael Wolf’s recent Honorable Mention from World Press Photo for his Google Street View-gleaned A Series of Unfortunate Events has been attracting some aesthetic discussions.

Here’s Wolf’s side of the picture:
I use a tripod and mount the camera, photographing a virtual reality that I see on the screen. It’s a real file that I have, I’m not taking a screenshot. I put the camera forward and do an exact crop, and that’s what makes it my picture. It doesn’t belong to Google, because I’m interpreting Google; I’m appropriating Google. If you look at the history of art, there’s a long history of appropriation.
Do you think Wolf’s Street View images deserved honorable mention? Thoughts?

Allow Me to Introduce, RoeVy

These Star Wars Jawa Lookalikes whomp your ears with a full throttle sound and a hell of a show. This tandem's gimmicky style consists of laying down a thick layer of smoke over the audience and blasting them with laser eyes. This dubsteppy duo hails from Columbus, OH and is sure to show a good time. They have demonstrated a large following in the central Ohio area and seem like their heading in the right direction.

----Jogger----

A lot of really cool psyche-rock is coming out of LA right now, really innovative, soul penetrating stuff. Jogger are a live electronic act composed of Jonathan Larroquette and Amir Yaghmai combining psyche-folk leanings similar Animal Collective and Ratatat with the sort of beat science trimmings more associated with the many faces of Daedelus. This Great Pressure is their debut full length release on the new Alpha Pup Records imprint, Magical Properties, and clearly demonstrates a distinct sound and a band ready to embrace the world with their fantastic sound. Jogger’s aesthetic centres around a few well chosen sonic themes, from afrobeat to the electronic rhythmic from techno crescendos and perfectly timed drops to glitched bit-tastic hiphop. What really stands out are their ethereal vocal harmonies that seem to transcend popular music, giving the project a very indie-friendly edge. Check out their music video for their single "Nephicide" below and also check out a live video of them performing "Gorilla Meat" at the LA based public radio station, KCRW.

BULLW∆CK

So BULLWACK has been popping up all over the place on blogs in a few different countries so I thought my people should know. So i'm trolling the internetz, trying to find things, anything at all, and nothing is coming up. What gives!? So until It (BULLWACK, which I will assume is a dude) releases some more info, i'm forced to rehash all the confusion surrounding these Electro/ Grime/ Dubstep sounds.

Very little is known about Bullwack beyond him starting to produce electronic music in 2010. His bio on the Onion Records web page says this:
His first remix won a contest held by SSS records and went on to be released alongside remixes by The Boomzers, F.O.O.L and The Toxic avenger. Since then Bullwack has produced remixes for Controls, Comic Strips, L.A.S.E.R. Voltronixx, Sirian Bank, M.O.G. King Minos, The Boomzers and Midibyte.

Check BULLWACK out on Myspace or on the more preferred soundcloud page where you can listen to the new EP Knave

My Name is Skrillex

It is early in 2011 but I may just have seen my favorite concert of the year. Skrillex live at the Mid! A venue that just opened in Chicago, IL about 5 block west of the loop. A 2 floor intimate setting with a large capacity that allowed for the bass cannons to fire. By bass cannon I mean the biggest smoke machine I have ever seen. Centered on the crowd was fogger that smothered the audience with every burst, this permitted Skrillex to do his worst.

This probally sums it up best...

Creep- "Days" [vid]

Really digging this band recently. The production duo of Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard hail from Brooklyn have really embraced the whole dark-core, witch-wave, with a splash of glittery goodness flying out over a grime filled music hall.

They recently did a mixtape for FACT Magazine online. Check it out here.
