Cultural Art

Joshua Callaghan is an L.A.-based artist who uses his education in cultural anthropology and the fine arts to create clever installations that serve as both art and a way to disguise undesirable city objects such as utility boxes. Check it out...

Like any self hating artist in the States, he is also a critique of American material culture. for his most recent exhibition at the bank gallery in LA, Callaghan pulled together found material to create abstract sculptures of graphs and charts mapping a variety of data. He uses both the found artifacts and the numbers to create a minimalist device by which to measure human behavior and culture. There are also some political undertones found in his work eluding to world population or world military spending.

Fuck Buttons

I've been in to this band for some time now and I have to say they are fucking sweet. Fuck Buttons is composed of Benjamin John Power and Andrew Hung from Bristol England. Their music is like a tidal flow of sound. Gentle keyboard distortions, layered up and build into a gentle repetition, buffeted by waves of semi-comprehensible screamed vocals. There is something in this sound that reminds me of an impending apocalypse. Like they have turned the phrase "the calm before the storm" into a soundtrack. I have to say though, if the world was ending in a week, I think I would rage the entire week to these guys. This joyous noise can be heard on their latest album titled Street Horrrsing and has been described as a "... 50 minute melange of iridescent synths, psychedelic drone, distorted vocals and tribal rhythm."

Weekend Jams: vol. 1

I would like to welcome you to the Drunken Monkee wonder world

Who is Drunken Monkee? Why should I know him? Well his beats is crazy, his flow is crazy, his lyrics is crazy... shit, this emcee is crazy. Born and raised in Englewood and on the streets of Chicago, Drunken Monkee has made his mark in the indie rap game. This man represents yet another new and innovative tangent in the Chicago rap scene. Check it out...

What you are seeing above is the :57 rough cut of Drunken Monkee's "Go Bezerk" music video. The song for "Go Bezerk" is only 3 minutes long, but the final clip will be 7-8 minutes long (they're calling it a "mini-thriller"), and the concept is that Drunken and his gang of apes escape from Lincoln Park Zoo to terrorize the Windy City streets.Directed by Amir George.

Check out his live video for his song "Backshots"

Start your morning feeling good about life...

Hahaha

Kristen Schaal is way funny. Enjoy...

Im pretty sure this is going to be really good...

Truly the best rapper alive

This is possibly going to be an his next album "Blueprint 3" on from hearing this song I really can't wait. Jay-Z's lyrics in this song are amazing I've listen to it 10 times a day and I still can't get enough. If Wayne ever wants to get on his level he needs to drop the fucking voice thing already...

    Jay-Z- "History"

Real Reality

Osang Gwon works between the fields of photography and sculpture. His style, enlists a painstaking method of utilizing photography along with Styrofoam sculpture to bring together the 2-D world of photography with that of the 3-D world of sculptures. Gwon plays with representations of reality and truth that come from working with these two mediums.

The process begins when a subject is captured on film, rendered, and reconstructed through the overlaying of the developed photographs onto the sculpture. Now, this is the cool part. The prints are used to depict the corresponding physiology and clothing of the subject and work to form an illusion of surface and tangibility. Often the figures are depicted in surreal and contorted poses. This may create an unsettling impression because what you see in front of you isn't in the form it should be. Look out for subtle differences or alterations, but for the most part, enjoy...

Some chill shit

Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. The addition of lyrics further adds a sense of mystery to his already down-tempo compositions.
    Flying Lotus- "Parisian Goldfish"

    Flying Lotus(feat Dolly)- "RobertaFlack"

    Flying Lotus- "Tea Leaf Dancers

A collection of quotes from his critics found on his myspace
Folks say..."The Tarantino of Beats", ":)", "Tomita on Coke","Donkeys drinking", "books falling down stairs on a very windy day","the bleep bleep shit", "Sweaty elephants", "futuristic jungle music", "some high shit", "God smashing on stuff with his feet", "Some movie shit", "The future"...

For those of you who watch Cartoon Network's Adult Swim you are most defiantly familiar with the soundtrack music during the periodic back screens with white writing. He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in many of these segments. Because of this, the chances that he has hooked up or simply meet Tim and Eric are very likely. I mention this because recently a music video was released directed by Tim Wareheim in association with WARP Records and WARP Film. The video is to "Parisian Goldfish", and is being hosted at a more permanent web address because it continues to be banned and taken down by people who are offended by explicit images.

This video is most likely NSFW, and it has flashing colors and lights.
If you are now ready to view the music video please click here...

huh!?

Ive never seen anything like this come out of the animated video community...
As quoted from Zeitguised website,
“Zeitguised made a piece in six acts for the opening exhibition at the Zirkel Gallery. It entails six imaginations of disoriented systems that take a catastrophic turn, including the evolution of educational plant-body-machine models and liquid building materials.”

Although very surreal and disturbing at times, aesthetically, it is very pleasing. Also, the soundtrack brings a strong sense of being to these plant-body-machine models. Over all, amazing... enjoy...

DJ Mujava- The current pinnacle of African house music.

Dj Mujava- "Township Funk"

From Pretoria, South Africa Mujava got his break when taxi drivers, who for the most part act as independent grassroots music distributors, had heard him play on community radio and decided to rep his music in their taxis. His the single posted above, released in October 2008, launched him out of South Africa and into the UK house scene. This track should be noted a prime example of Kwaito. This South African music genera is based on house music beats, but typically at a slower tempo and containing melodic and percussive African samples which are looped creating almost a hypnotic resonance, deep basslines and often vocals shouted or chanted rather than rapped.

I'm really digging this song right now... check out the music video for the song here to see some dancing and the crazyness that is Dj Mujava.

Scrach Master Tykes

Whoa! These kids are good!

They are 9 year old DJ Sara and 6 year old DJ Ryusei they have been doing this from such a young age that i'm sure those are their legal names. They have performed with other famous DJs, at Grammy award parties and have been used in many TV commercials and are considered TV celebrities in Japan. Scratching is difficult because of the coordination that must occur between the beat and the hand movements both on the turn table and on the cross fader. Truly a form of talent.

Controled Tagging

Fly on the wall is a stop motion, time-lapse, motion control filming a circular canvas documentary made for Discovery Channel. Shot in South Africa, the theme was the environment and the artist's responses to it. Numerous street artists, musicians, painters and animators contributed their talent and time for the cause over a non-stop 12 hour period to make the final 2 minute film. The film was conceptualized and directed by Bryan Little.

Jay-E

The unconventional nature of much of his music, and the lack of conventional release methods for that music, has, since 2007, made Jay Electronica the object of much attention. He is an emcee of mystery releasing singles and mixes predominantly on the internet through his myspace page, or through leaked forums.

Through his wild rhymes and ground breaking music, and international style you would think that he is a product of the Brooklyn retro rap scene. However, Jay Electronica is a true native of New Orleans, but with out the southern accent. This just the tip of the mysterious iceberg. This rising emcee may be from the home of Juvenile and Lil' Wayne and grew up surrounded by bounce music, but hear what he says about himself...

“People will say, ‘How could he be from New Orleans and rap like he does?’” Jay says, echoing a common Internet observation of his abstract rhyme style, which is more traceable to Nas (who appears on Act II) or Pharoahe Monch then Wayne or Juve. “Fuck where I’m from. I’m from the moon. I love New Orleans, it made me who I am, but, at the end of the day, it’s just a place. I rep man and human beings.”

This mantra is clearly stated by him in one of his first major singles released after making it big in 2007. On this truly moving track is built around 15 minutes of continuous music, without drums, beats, bass or bounce. Built from the soundtrack to the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, There are five segments or movements, marked by changes in music and in mood. There are raps by Electronica, and occasional snippets of sampled movie dialogue. Other segments contain spoken word by Just Blaze and Erykah Badu describing the artist over the soundtrack. His love for the human race, movies, and outer space, are gentntly placed into a well produced intro track.
Jay Electronica- "Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (the pledge)"

Recently, Jay Electronica provided the music for NAS in his most recent album's opening track, "Queens Get the Money"...

Its clear why Jay E is one of the most buzzed about rappers of 2008...
    Jay Electronica- "Exhibit A (Transformations)"

    Jay Electronica- "Bitches & Drugs"

Street Art Awards 2008

Street art will get its first awards event in December and the winners will be chosen by the public. Street art has brought democracy to the art world. It has created an individually driven culture where Damien Hurst can sell his artwork directly at auction and a random Banksy on the wall of your house can raise its value.

The General Public can go here to register for free to cast their ballot, upload their own images, and browse hundreds of other images of street art from all over the world.

There are two categories, Urban Art and street art... below are the leaders of each category as of today...

Urban Art: CASE- "Porky Bible"

Street Art: Banksy- "Cave Painting"

Like any awards show, the winners will be awarded with specially commissioned sculptures.

Street Art Awards will take place on December 4th at Rough Trade East, London, when the best piece of street art from 2008 will be announced. Members of the public can vote online or cast a ballot on the night.

Coolness

Sweet use of flip book action...
    Kraak and Smaak- "Squeeze Me"

Damn this is sharp....ie

I think this is mind-blowingly cool...

No matter what, you have to admit the idea of writing all over a Lamborghini with Sharpie markers is pretty cool. It took the artists at Prestige (Lamborghini Miami) about 2 weeks to ink the artwork and seal it up with a layer of clear coat.

But you can't look at this and say "wow, this is original". Fact is that painting cool art on cars is about 3-4 decades old. Below is the Rauschenberg BMW 635 CSi Art Car painted in 1986...

“Processes: Living Paintings"

The images above and below are projected on to the 35 by 16 meter façade of the Phyletisches Museum in Jena, Germany. In coordination with corresponding light choreography, ambient music and synced sound effects, video artist, director, and producer, Robert Seidel commemorates the 100th anniversary of the institution and the structure in which it resides.

Seidel attempts to capture the work that has been done at this museum through impressions of color, movement and form in combination with his personal artistic research into intertwining primordial structures, whirring micro-surfaces, traces of smeared motion-fragments, nostalgic optical aberrations, pulsating mirage shadows as well as biographical reflections.

A quick video documentry highlighting the Street Artist named Space Invader

And how about some 8-bit fine art...
Originally released in early 2004, this short series of photographs captures those moments where New York meets Nintendo.

But, you may be saying to yourself, wow this music is great I wish there was something I could wear to show my enthusiasm... Ta Da! I present to you the 8-bit tie! Unfortunately because of the simple little fact that a real tied tie would end up creating a curved triangle knot, which is very un-8-bit, the tie is a clip on in order to maintain its rigidity and simplicity.

8-bit music refers to a style of electronic music totally inspired by the sounds that can be created by old computer consoles. Some may listen and simply think that they are listening to the soundtrack from a video game, and the musicians themselves claim that they create this music out of a common love for classic video games, but I must stress the following sounds are far from something that simple. Because it takes more than just these small plastic devices to produce a surprisingly intense sound. It takes a relentless search for new ways to add, subtract, link, merge, synthesize, tweak, alter, and adjust, to overcome the limitations of these simple machines.

The artists below all only use the Game Boy system and some other machines to distort the sound being produced. Other than that, this is as basic as it comes... besides 1-bit music... but you can only imagine what that sounds like. That alone is a post in itself...
Bit Shifter- "March of the Nucleotides"

    Bit Shifter- "Hexadecimal Genome"

    Random- "Beautiful Brutality"

    Random- "Grey Love"

    Nullsleep- "On Target"

    Nullsleep- "Ballistic Picnic"

8-bit, or low-bit, music is high energy, sporadic, and primarily produced and composed on low bit computers by grown up nerds and video game enthusiasts alike. Artists take advantage of these perfected palm sized systems commonly known as the Nintendo Game Boy. Other consoles used include the Commodore 64, Game Boy, Atari 2600, and the Nintendo Entertainment System aka NES. Musicians boot up an "LSDJ" cartridge which gets you access to the program which turns the system into a synthesizer and a sequencer and using only simple tones allows the user to do some pretty crazy things. Which brings us to the reason for this music. 8-bit music isn't about using the Game Boy or any other Nintendo system (actually Nintendo seems to have distanced itself from this music scene), but using the hardware inside these systems to create this music. Because of this the genre can be appreciated in literally every state or nation anywhere in the world that has come across a computer or some form of computer technology in the last three decades which makes it a truly international music form. Specifically, its blowing up in Japan, Sweden, Spain, France, Greece, Russia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, and of course the USA.

Thats all for today. More tomorrow.

Funny shit

The best SNL digital short since the Emmy-winning "Dick in a Box". Although funny and creative this one won't win an Emmy. This digital short about “Ras Trent” pokes fun at that occasional college-kid that falls neck deep for Rasta culture...hahaha

...Jah, ever-loving, ever-fearful, ever-sure, Selassie I...

Extra! Extra! T-pain has a song out that doesn't suck!

This song is actually pretty sick! I've known t-pain to be talented, but he really just needed to kick the robot voice thingy to the curb... you feel me? so ya in response to others picking up on the auto-tuner I guess he released this song.

Also DJ Khaled is on the track too, for about 40 seconds but its amazing that he shouts the F-word and the N-word about 50 times during his time on the track. Check it...
