Marina & The Diamonds is one of my favorite artists to emerge this year. Despite the name, Marina is a solo artist, bringing merger of beats, piano and at the forefront, some stunning poetic singing. Her haunting voice and simple, yet very effective melodies have embedded themselves deep into the pleasure center of my brain. She works with a selection of talented friends and musicians for her live shows. First though, Marina released debut single "Obsessions" on London's Neon Gold label, home also to Passion Pit, recently just this past valentines day... Enjoy!
Wesley Allsbrook was born and raised in the north/central region of North Carolina. After graduating from RISD, she settled into life as a freelance illustrator, producing not just for commission, but for her own pleasure. What drew me to her images was the superb use of color, the delicate lines, and the splendid layering effect similarly to Japanese woodblock prints, which similarly are employed to tell a complex story. their tension and flow, their mix of the familiar and the decidedly strange simultaneous mixed, sometimes create and expression of joy or something darker. These characteristics are evidence supporting a young artist of immense talent and originality. Enjoy.
"Can Bacteria Rescue the Oil Industry?"

Yeasayer is a Brooklyn based indie experimental rock group comprised of Anand Wilder, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Luke Fasano. They have describe their sound as being "Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel". On their debut full-length, All Hour Cymbals, Yeasayer display a preoccupation with our world's increasingly bleak prospects. in their first singles released from the album consisted of the tracks "Sunrise" and, a personal favorite, "2080". Yeasayer- "2080"
Yet, while the take a lot of inspiration from all different kinds of music from all around the world, and their music is sometimes labeled 'world music', they tend to shy away from the sort of mass lumping of non-English/American music that comes with that label. However, Their poly-rhythmic backbeat and melodious uplifting chants creates a sound that's extremely enjoyable to just lay down chill to... Yeasayer has started recording their sophomore album and you can track its progress via blog.
Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn’t until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. Gillis specializes in mashup style remixes, in which he uses often a dozen or more unauthorized samples from different songs to create a new song. While his first album, Secret Diary (2002), was full of purposeful glitches and noise, his subsequent albums, Unstoppable (2004) moved closer towards danceable mixes of varying genres. With the groundbreaking Night Ripper (2006) and now the fourth Girl Talk album, Feed The Animals, he reaches a synergy with a creation that is centered on re-inventing instant party starting pop. As a re-mixer, Girl Talk is also in hot demand having tweeked tracks for the likes of Beck, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn and John, Of Montreal and the 2007 release of Thrill Jockey mega-mix. Enjoy a GirlTalk tune below or go here for more...
A collective of like-minded graffiti artists known together as Lightfaktor based in Cologne, Germany, comprises the talents of $ehvermögen, JIAR and 10X (real names Marcel Panne, David Lüpschen and Tim Fehske). The trio collaborated and developed the artform they refer to as “lightwriting”. With “lightwriting” they are able to get the best from photography, painting, graffiti and stop-motion film-making techniques. By combining all these elements together in their work they can go new ways and realize creative ideas in a fresh way.
The brief was simple: to build a house to retire to in order to grow food, entertain and enjoy the East Anglia landscape. The outcome was as unconventional as they come. In Suffolk, England, a structure was built that has the ability to vary or connect the overall building's composition and character according to season, weather or simply a desire to delight. In coorporation with dRMM Architects, some money, and a lot of creative time and ideas the owners saw their dream built. Check it out here. Whoa, I want to go to that...
Coca-Cola has collaborated with Justice and So Me, the Creative Director of Ed Banger Records. Check out a first look at the final design of the Club Coke 2009 bottle, which features the text: "Do The Dance By Justice And So Me"... on the label. It marks the 5th anniversary of the Club Coke initiative, but who's really counting. PLUS an added bonus...the bottle glows in the dark! So you know this new bottle will be selling in the club very soon.
Rene Gagnon, either he is the man who was immortalized by Joe Rosenthal's famous World War II photograph, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima or hes the man described as creating abstract expressionist graffiti. Lucky you, the Gagnon refered to in this post is not the first. Youtube carries a bunch of videos about the dude, but here's one where Gagnon reflects on his process and creative catharsis. Below are a couple images of his most recent work seen around the streets. He has a solo show of similar work titled "HOOD", at the Narrows Center for the Arts, in Fall River, MA. Enjoy.
He's got a bunch of studio work as well as street art. Check out more of his stuff here.
Here is a video directed by Nabil Elderkin the intro song off of 808s. Nabil has done some other Music videos for Kanye, including "Champion" and "Throws Some D's on it (parody)". Even though this is not being released as the next single, Kanye said on his blog that "Amazing" is to be the next single.
First, this made my eyes hurt. It's deceiving. At first I thought the compression was horrible, creating an extremely pixilated image. I tried to reload the video a few times before I realized that its supposed to be that way! But it seems that this visual effect works extremely well with the rest of the visual effects, as well as the sound effects... especially the auto-tuner (which doesn't go well with anything). Also while I watched this and read comments of "original" or "crazy new effect" I couldn't help but remember another music video released by the indie band, Chairlift for their song, "Evident Utensil" to view via here. Supposedly this is a technique called "Data Moshing" which is a slang term for the effect that is known as Compression Hack Fade or Compression Hacking.
Do we shape the cities in which we live or do they shape us? That’s the central question of Tokyo! a new film collecting three separate tales (each with their own titles) by Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, and Bong Joon-oh. If you enjoy the trailer you might want to check out the official site complete with gallery, links, downloads and more. The Movie is playing in many locations over the course of the next few months, check out the official site for those dates/times/places. Enjoy.
Watch a teaser for a single from the french band, Malajube, and off their new album, Labyrinths, out now. Its like revisionist CLUE for the for our generation... Complete with Mr. LimeGreen, Mr. Argyle, Femme Fatal, and my favorite- Mr. Fez
Here we have a new mix tape re-produced by Max Justus, who took Kanye’s 808's and injected 8 of the songs with the gritty, fun, electro/chiptune beats that Max is known for, and that some think should have been there in the first place.
There’s a slightly spaced out jam for Love Lockdown, an uplifting and occasionally chopped groove for Street Lights, a dance hop redo of Welcome To Heartbreak, an Amiga shuffle on Heartless, and a whole lot of sparkle and charisma all over.
Well, while I have to admit it rocks, hard, There's something that is similar to a slap in the face when you take an album (especially from someone who is as a pompous protectionist as Kanye is, and who you know produced it to the point where he thought it acuratly represented what he wanted to create), and superimpose and rework and remaster it into something you deem better. However, I think remixing is great, and should be done, and allowed, I don't think it should ever replace the original album... anyway that's my two cents. Listen to this with great admiration but don't forget the original.
Pretty cool video for a very melodically monotonous new single "We Walk"... o wait, the song beat and tempo is kinda like walking... orly? What do you think of the super cool stop go/ freeze frame video effects?
'Beacon' is a kinetic light installation by Chris O'Shea, which presents an array of emergency beacon lights that interacts with visitors, tracking their movement through the instillation space, creating an immersive and playful experience. The movement of the beacons are orchestrated in real-time by a bespoke control system, which uses tracking information from the cameras to coordinate the interactive and highly responsive behavior of the lights.
(Currently) Berlin-based conceptual illustrator, Christoph Niemann’s recent LEGO post on the New York Times blog is fantastic. Niemann's illustrations have appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine and American Illustration. He has more on his site. Enjoy! And my personal favorite...
Christian Bale freaks the fuck out on the set of Terminator 4, and somehow the audio makes it’s way to the internet. So the great musicians of the internetz hack and saw, chop and screw this into a musical gem. The first song below is mashed with the batman theme which makes it that much more awesome. The second is by The (amazing) Mae Shi
Peep these two extremely talented and stylized graffiti artists, Pose and Ewok, of The Seventh Layer just doing that thing they do. The video presents a somewhat more interesting look at presenting graffiti art then your average boring time lapse of some dude spraying a wall. Looks like they succeeded.
Quick pop promo for retro-futuristic music makers, Official Secrets Act, and their single "So Tomorrow". They're currently recording their debut album for a March/April release. Enjoy.
Flooded McDonald's is a film work by Superflex in which a convincing life-size replica of the interior of a McDonald's, without any customers or staff present, gradually floods with water. Reviews of this film claim many things. It is a commentary on the relationships between global warming, and, or our role as consumers, and, or our growing social unrest, and, or globalization, and, or capitalist imperialism. This film is too loose and too raw to just place one label to describe the purpose of this art piece, and to possibly use it as a tool for some end. So with this film, although it does manifest many different subjects in the mind of the viewer, It generally points you in the right direction (and not like animal rights or the moon). You could say that they've tried to make it as open to interpretation as possible so people can bring their own views into it. So people... what is your interpretation?
This is a short clip of the actual 20 min run time... enjoy...
Holy smokes! Assembled in late 2004, San Francisco’s favorite party band, Still Flyin’ has become a juggernaut in the music world, promoting lighthearted feelings and odes to good times. This reggae-inspired project's debut album, Never Gonna Touch The Ground represents a reggae-indie-rock pedigree. The first single of that LP was titled a "Good Thing its a Ghost Town Around Here". The video isn't the best, but the song is great.
Besides their token reggae-party default setting, Still Flyin’ is equally skilled at the slo-jams, high energy thunder-jams, and the catchy world-pop of their second single, "The Hott Chord is Struck".
Enjoyed this remix style? Check out more of Phaseone's stuff... He also has a mix tape titled Mad Weight, a 48-track collection of instrumentals... for free!

You may be asking yourself... why call this series 'SlotMusic'. Well here are two reasons...
SlotMusic represents the new physical music format of our generation.
SlotMusic enables consumers to instantly and easily enjoy music from their favorite artists.
Andy Samberg and his comedy group, The Lonely Island, are back with another hilarious record and recruited T-Pain for some background vocals and a verse. I wouldn’t go as far to say “I’m On A Boat” is on the level of the instant classic “Jizz In My Pants” or "Dick in a Box", but Blizzy-B certainly spits the hot fire.
Here is a charming and imaginative bit based on the character in the novel, "The Tinwoodman of OZ" by L. Frank Baum. I hope you enjoy, Death to the Tinman directed by Ray Tintori, as much as I did. Soundtrack is also stellar...This short is Just fantastic.
